Still in motion
Fendika Azmari Bet is an historic home of exceptional live entertainment seamlessly intertwined with poignant comedic improvised verses. Melaku Belay has revitalized Fendika through his leadership since 2008. “Azmari bet” literally means “house of the azmari” and it is a place where people gather to listen and enjoy traditional Ethiopian music. The azmari are famous for their sense of humor and their perceptiveness in the songs they improvise about their audience, or about social and political subjects.”
That being said, Fendika Azmari Bet and Gallery is the perfect venue to host Aron Simeneh’s most recent photographic series on the many types of dance in Ethiopia. Simeneh captures stills of intense movements, of dancers wearing traditional dress from many different ethnic groups. The exhibition of his work will be accompanied by a live show giving participants and festival-goers an opportunity to experience a bit of local Ethiopian culture and a night out at Fendika Azmari Bet.
