Abdus Salaam
Abdus Salaam is a self taught multi-medium artist from Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing on experience, traditions, and affirmations his work is a holistic representation of his state and a reflection of the world around him. With a love for large format photography and his progressive use of classical materials such as paper, chemicals, and light, his work is a homage to the tradition of photography at its essence and an exploration of the malleable boundaries of photography’s fundamental components and its capacity for story telling. Rather than taking the three dimensional world and recording it in a two dimensional art piece, as is with traditional photography, his work, in the dark, is a birth of light and instinct from no other place than the multidimensional space of the heart.
The Ocean of Limitlessness
Made entirely in the dark, this collection of abstract darkroom “light paintings”, by use of light, chemicals, photo paper and spontaneous intuitive and instinctual gestures based on a single intention as read in each poem, is a statement of experience in the search for the light of truth and purpose in an ever darkening world, through the artist’s embracing of Islam. A holistic sharing of that experience and the understanding of the true nature of the tradition in contrast to the dogmatic merciless and reactionary propagation of fear.
